This computer was located in a HOSPITAL, with surge suppressor.  Today’s computers are VERY sensitive.  I have only seen three computers BURN with evidence of FLAMES.  NONE of these computer systems were built by JRC.   Luckily this system was in a heavy metal case.  If it was plastic, the flames could have melted through the case and to the environment around.

News reports have claimed LOSS OF LIFE due to computers catching fire.

Today’s systems require a higher level of surge suppression, and more important, A CONSTANT POWER SOURCE.  LOW power can cause power supplies to strain in order to keep the constant current that is demanded from components.  So, surge suppression is not enough.  Watch for dim lights or dimming of lights when the computer is on or turned on.  You may have to relocate the system to different power sources.

BE CAREFUL, Just as you turn off a coffeepot when not in use, switch off your computer.  TURN IT OFF AT THE SURGE SUPPRESSOR.  (Reason Below)

WHY do some so called experts say to leave a computer on?  The answer is the expansion and contraction of silicon, metals, and components over time will weaken.  Causing your computer to go out.  So they say to leave it on, not to have the expansion or contraction take its toll.  Why not leave your car running all the time?  Less expansion of the metals of the engine.  You might have to change tires and belts more often though!  BE WISE!  I would't do this, neither should you.  Next time someone says, "Leave your computer on all the time", ask them if they will pay for the loss of your property if it catches fire, or if they will go to your house and turn off the computer when your at work if an electrical storm starts.

Believe it or not.  Since 1989, JRC has seen VERY, VERY FEW motherboard failures.  Matter of factly, you'll probably replace your system due to upgrades and faster processors before a part burns out.

But at JRC, we have seen MANY MANY computers damaged by electrical malfunction and lightning.

Some Corporate buildings and businesses have CONDITIONED electrical lines.  They are ORANGE outlets in your office.  This means the electricity has less spikes (peaks) and low power (throughs).  NOT ALL businesses have these lines.  NOT ONE home have I ever visited have this protection.

REASONS FOR TURNING OFF AT SUPPRESSOR:

Some surge suppressors state, "This surge suppressor must be ON in order to stop lightning, etc..."  Make sure you purchase one that states something about, "even if not on."

Computers today turn the power off when you click “shut down.”  Power is still provided to the components inside.  Some computers even let you switch ON by the keyboard.  The POWER IS STILL ACTIVE in your computer.  By turning off at the power source (Suppressor).  You now have taken the power source away from the computer.

UNPLUG your modem, computer or phone(DSL LINE) or Broadband cable in case of severe lightning storms.  In the year of  2002, JRC had a HIGH volume of lightning repairs for clients.  Sure insurance MAY pay for replacement.  How long can you go without a computer?

As you can see, even the METAL was scorched badly.  BE SAFE.  Quality and knowledge can save your life.

DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU

NEVER leave your computer unattended.
